OTHERWORLDLY 2024: Possible Worlds: Towards a New Imaginary

Vi översköljs dagligen av dystopiska bilder som skapar en slags framtidströtthet, stumhet eller ”future fatigue”. Vi behöver nu mer än någonsin tidigare både vetenskap och fantasi för att formulera vilka möjligheter som finns för framtida generationer.

Possible Worlds: Towards a New Imaginary är ett seminarium under festivalen Otherworldly, där konsten, forskningen och framtidsspaningen får lika stor plats i samtalet om hur vi kan använda vår främsta förmåga; att med hjälp av vår fantasi kunna omfatta vår framtid.

I samtalet får vitt skilda perspektiv plats genom Timothy Morton (deltar via länk), ekolog och filosof, Michela Magas, innovationsrådgivare, Karim Jebari, filosof och Doris Rusch, speldesigner och forskare. Panelens erfarenhet av katastrofscenarier, humana dataspel, mörk ekologi, ny teknologi, kreativitet och innovationsarbete bildar en ovanlig sammansättning för att upprätta möjliga scenarier för framtiden. Även publiken kommer att bjudas in till att dela sina visioner, via AI-genererade bilder som panelen får reagera på.

Seminariet arrangeras av Helena Hammarskiöld/Blow Your Mind i samarbete med Uppsala University Culture & Creativity (UUC&C), Institutet för Framtidsstudier och Uppsala Konsert & Kongress som en del av festivalen Otherworldly.

Timothy Morton (deltar via länk)

Filosofen och ekoteoretikern Timothy Morton är en del av den nya objektorienterade filosofin. Hans bok Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (2013) är ett vågat och svindlande försök att sammanföra de ännu divergerade fälten kvantmekanik (”the weirdness of small objects”) och relativitetsteori (”the weirdness of big objects”), och sedan föra dem in i filosofin och konsten. Morton har skrivit 25 böcker som har översatts 47 gånger till 20 språk. Genom åren har Morton också samarbetat med artister och konstnärer som Björk, Laurie Anderson, Olafur Eliasson och Pharrell Williams. Mortons egendomliga begreppsvokabulär – ”mörk ekologi”, ”the strange stranger”, ”the mesh” – har plockats upp av författare inom en rad områden, från litteratur och epistemologi till rättslära och religion. Timothy Morton är verksam vid Rice University i Houston och framhåller att ”en person som håller på att förlora sin fantasi är en mycket farlig person”.

Michela Magas

Med 30 års erfarenhet inom innovationsområdet är Michela Magas en brobyggare mellan vetenskap och konst, design och teknologi och mellan den akademiska forskningen och industrin. Hon är innovationsrådgivare till EU-kommissionen och G7-ledarna, grundare av Industry Commons Foundation och deltagare i EU-kommissionens ordförande Ursula von der Leyens särskilda rundabordssamtal för utvecklingen av New European Bauhaus, ett interdisciplinärt initiativ för ett mer hållbart, inkluderande och kreativt framtida samhällsbygge. Hon sitter också i CERN IdeaSquares (ISAB-G), partikelfysiklaboratoriets innovationscenter. 2017 utsågs hon till European Woman Innovator of the Year och 2016 mottog hon Innovation Luminary Award for Creative Innovation från EU-kommissionen och Intel Labs Europe. Magas är även grundare av MTF Labs, en global plattform för mer än 8 000 kreativa innovatörer och vetenskapliga forskare.

Karim Jebari

Karim Jebari är forskare vid Institutet för framtidsstudier. Hans forskningsområden är interdisciplinära, och kretsar kring filosofi, politisk teori och framtidsstudier. Jebaris forskning vid Mimir rör idéer och frågeställningar kopplade till globala katastrofrisker och det jordiska livets långsiktiga framtid, som han menar har försummats inom X-riskrörelsen.

Mimircentret för långsiktig framtidsforskning är en forskningsmiljö vid Institutet för framtidsstudier, en fristående forskningsorganisation som lyfter framtidsperspektiven inom forskningen och det offentliga samtalet.

Doris Rusch

Doris C. Rusch (fil.dr) är spelutvecklare, forskare och spelfantast med bakgrund inom humaniora. Hon är professor vid Institutionen för speldesign vid Uppsala universitet. Hennes spel har vunnit mängder av priser och hon har varit keynote-talare och moderator vid internationella kongresser som Clash of Realities, DiGRA, Game Developers, Meaningful Play, Nordic Game Conference, FDG och TEDx. Rusch är även författare till boken Making Deep Games – Designing Games with Meaning and Purpose (Taylor & Francis 2017).

The internationally recognized philosopher Timothy Morton and innovation expert Michela Magas meet game designer Doris Rusch and futurist Karim Jebari in a captivating conversation about the major issues of our time.

We are drowning in daily dystopian images, creating a sort of ”future fatigue.” Now, more than ever, we must use scientific knowledge, artistic fantasy, and our human capacity for new imaginaries to articulate the possible options for future generations.

The seminar Possible Worlds: Towards a New Imaginary will be a space where art meets research and future scouting to discuss how to tackle future developments with imagination.

A diverse range of perspectives will be represented by Timothy Morton (participating via video link), ecologist and philosopher; Michela Magas, innovation advisor; Karim Jebari, philosopher; and Doris Rusch, game designer and researcher. The panel’s combined expertise—spanning disaster scenarios, human-centered gaming, dark ecology, new technology, creativity, and innovation—will create a unique platform for envisioning possible future scenarios. The audience will also be invited to contribute their visions through AI-generated images, which the panel will respond to.

Timothy Morton (participating via link)

Timothy Morton, ecologist and philosopher, is part of the new object-oriented philosophy. The book Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World is a queasily vertiginous quest to synthesize the still divergent fields of quantum theory (the weirdness of small objects) and relativity (the weirdness of big objects) and insert them into philosophy and art. Morton is the author of 25 books, translated 47 times into 20 languages, and has over the years collaborated with artist like Björk, Laurie Anderson, Olafur Eliasson, and Pharrell Williams. Morton’s peculiar conceptual vocabulary – “dark ecology”, “the strange stranger”, “the mesh” – has been picked up by writers in a cornucopia of fields, from literature and epistemology to legal theory and religion. Morton is active at the Rice University and recognizes that “a person who is losing a fantasy is a very dangerous person”.

Michela Magas

Michela Magas bridges the worlds of science and art, design and technology, academic research and industry, with a track record of 30 years of innovation. She is innovation advisor to the European Commission and the G7 leaders, creator of the Industry Commons Foundation and Member of President von der Leyen’s High-Level Round Table for the New European Bauhaus. She sits on the Advisory Board of CERN IdeaSquare – the CERN space for frontier innovation (ISAB-G). In 2017 she was awarded European Woman Innovator of the Year and in 2016 she was presented with an Innovation Luminary Award for Creative Innovation by the European Commission and Intel Labs Europe. Magas is also the founder of MTF Labs, a global community platform of over 8000 creative innovators and scientific researchers.

Karim Jebari

Karim Jebari is a researcher at The Institute for Futures Studies. His research interests are highly interdisciplinary, combining philosophy, political theory and future studies. His research at Mimir concerns ideas and issues related to global catastrophic risks and the long-term future of earth-originating life that he believes have been neglected in the X-risk community.

The Mimir Center for Long Term Futures Research is based at The Institute for Futures Studies, an independent research foundation that promotes future perspectives in science and public debate.

Doris Rusch

Dr. Doris C. Rusch is a game designer, researcher and play aficionado with a humanities background who holds a position as Professor at the Department of Game Design at Uppsala University. Her games have won numerous awards, and she has been an international keynote speaker and presenter including Clash of Realities, DiGRA, Game Developers Conference, Meaningful Play, Nordic Game Conference, FDG and TEDx. She authored Making Deep Games – Designing Games with Meaning and Purpose (Taylor & Francis 2017).
