Uppsala Chamber Orchestra’s honorary conductor Paul Mägi leads the season finale with a Nordic program.
ICE by the Finland-Swedish composer Cecilia Damström opens the concert. Damström depicts global warming, as well as the collapse of an ecosystem with melting ice and increasingly shorter winters. “ICE” translates to ice, but can also be read as an acronym for “In Case of Emergency.”
The evening’s soloist is the Armenian-Danish pianist Maryanna Shirinyan, a sought-after soloist and chamber musician who is a frequent guest on many international stages. Here we will hear her play perhaps the most famous work of the Norwegian national romanticist Edvard Grieg, the Piano Concerto from 1868.
The final version of Sibelius’s first symphony premiered in 1900 and contributed to the composer’s international breakthrough. This passionate and powerful work concludes the concert evening and Uppsala Chamber Orchestra’s season.
