About the Performance
It is no exaggeration to call Jesus Christ Superstar one of the world’s most groundbreaking musicals of all time. The legendary rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice changed the musical world when it was first released as a concept album in 1970. With Deep Purple’s singer Ian Gillan as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas, the album became an immediate success and laid the foundation for a whole new era in musical drama – where rock met religion, and where the Bible’s stories gained new power in contemporary tone and rhythm.
A year later, in 1971, the musical had its world premiere on Broadway, and audiences flocked to it. The raw energy, the unforgettable melodies, and the human portrayal of Jesus’ last days made a deep impression – both on theater critics and audiences worldwide. Since then, Jesus Christ Superstar has been staged in countless versions, in languages and on stages in all parts of the world, and is today considered one of the most loved and played musicals ever.
In this concert performance, the audience is invited to a powerful and poignant interpretation of the story – where the magnificent meets the heartfelt. In the leading roles we see Martin Stokke Mathiesen as Jesus, Petter Snive as Judas, Johanna Kylberg as Mary Magdalene, Fredrik Lexfors as Pilate and John-Alexander Eriksson as Herod.
