About the Performance

With one of the most distinctive voices of our time, Spanish-born singer Concha Buika mixes her musical bouquet of traditional Spanish music copla, flamenco, jazz, Afro-pop, funk and Latin rhythms.

With her lightly veiled voice marinated in the longing, sorrow and sadness of the heart, this acclaimed and Latin Grammy award-winning singer has put the world’s audiences and artists at her feet.

Her parents came to Spain as political refugees from Equatorial Guinea. Born in Mallorca, she grew up in a multicultural and musical home, circumstances that are reflected in a music that carries a range of styles and languages.

After the critically acclaimed debut album “Buika” in 2005, the breakthrough came with “Mi Niña Lola” in 2006 and the nomination for the Latin Grammy with the third album “Niña de Fuego” in 2008.

Buika has collaborated with a long list of world musicians such as Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés, Pat Metheny, Carlos Santana, Anoushka Shankar and Chick Corea. She also sang in Pedro Almodovar’s movie “La piel que habito, The Skin I Live In”.

When this world-class singer, songwriter and poet comes to Uppsala Konsert & Kongress during her spring tour, you can prepare yourself for a journey into a musical universe where a number of different traditions are embodied in one expressive voice – the only one of its kind.

UKK x Selam

Uppsala Concert & Congress continues to develop its programming activities through collaboration with the music industry’s top expertise. The cultural organization Selam has since 1997 successfully broadened Swedish cultural life with music from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and has taken Swedish music out into the world. The UKK x Selam collaboration, which began in 2022, is a multi-year initiative with the goal of presenting three to four major concert experiences in Uppsala per year.

The collaboration has so far resulted in concerts with, among others, Polar Prize winners Angélique Kidjo (Benin) and Youssou N’Dour (Senegal), Ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopia), Orchestra Baobab (Senegal), Brazilian superstar Marisa Monte, Spain’s flamenco queen Estrella Morente and several of Cuba’s top salsa bands.

The concert is presented by UKK x Selam with marketing support from the organizations FlamencoFredag, Casa Latinoamericana Sweden and SIU – Samarbetsorganisationen för Invandrarföreningar i Uppsala.
