About the Performance

Program

Sergei Rachmaninov: Piano Trio Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor
Daniel Börtz: Piano Trio
Britta Byström: A Walk to Kungsbacka
Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Trio Op. 97 “Archduke Trio”
In January 1892, Sergei Rachmaninov made his concert debut as a pianist in Moscow, performing, among other pieces, his own Trio élégiaque. He wrote this piano trio in just four days, two weeks before the concert performance. Like most of his music at this time, this trio was strongly influenced by Tchaikovsky. When Tchaikovsky suddenly died, Rachmaninov wrote a second Trio élégiaque in memory of his mentor.

Daniel Börtz belongs to a notable generation of composers, many of whom studied under Ingvar Lidholm. His major breakthrough came in 1991 when he collaborated with Ingmar Bergman on the opera The Bacchae, and his catalog of works is extensive, ranging from solo pieces to symphonies. The Piano Trio for Kungsbacka Piano Trio was composed in 2000.

Since Britta Byström won the Da capo prize at the German Brandenburg Biennale in 2014 with “A Walk after Dark,” there have been many walks. These are musical conversations with other composers or, as here, with Kungsbacka Piano Trio, in “A Walk to Kungsbacka,” premiered in 2022.

Piano Trio Op. 97 by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1811 is commonly called the Archduke Trio, as it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf of Austria. Rudolf was an amateur pianist and patron, friend, and composition student of Beethoven, who dedicated a dozen compositions to him.

Kungsbacka Piano Trio

One of the world’s leading piano trios consisting of Malin Broman, violin, Jesper Svedberg, cello, Simon Crawford-Phillips, piano.

In 2027, Kungsbacka Piano Trio celebrates 30 years. They are starting the celebration as early as 2025 and 2026 with a season as Artist-in-Residence here in Uppsala. Since its inception, the trio has had a prominent role on the Swedish stages and made an impressive international career. With this unique residency creation, the trio takes the opportunity to summarize its 30 years. In the series, the program items are carefully selected works that have meant a lot to the ensemble and to the members as individual musicians.

Welcome to Poste Restante!

Kungsbacka Piano Trio c/o Musik i Uppland.
Poste Restante – a new chamber music series in Uppsala Concert & Congress, Hall B, with six concerts during the 2025–2026 season.

Each concert begins with an introduction, where the audience has the opportunity to become more familiar with the composer, musicians, and music. Live music is at the center, but the interaction between people and the enjoyment of good food and drink are also integral parts of the overall experience. Poste Restante is also a significant platform for Sweden’s upcoming chamber musicians through the public master classes offered.

The concert is included in the Poste Restante subscription.
