About the Performance

Shai Maestro (born 1987) is one of the most exciting pianists of his generation. He began his international career at the age of 16 in Avishai Cohen’s legendary trio. With his last two albums on the German label ECM – produced by record company mastermind Manfred Eicher – he has joined the ranks of pianists who have helped shape the label’s distinctive sound, such as Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley and Chick Corea. Live, Shai Maestro and his fellow musicians offer concerts with both energy and emotional depth, where the music moves between jazz, cinematic sound worlds and influences from the different corners of the music world. It’s music that finds its way in, challenges and stays with you.

With “The Guesthouse”, which will be released on record this spring, Maestro opens a new chapter. After almost three years of work, he has found a new expression where songwriting meets dynamic production and acoustic and electronic elements are woven together – bold, beautiful and unlike anything he has done before. The compositions are more concentrated and the tone even more personal. Influences range from Rosalía’s rhythms and Paul Simon’s storytelling to John Coltrane’s harmonic depth. “The Guesthouse” is a concentrated and powerful statement: technical brilliance in balance with artistic maturity – and a transgressive sound in tune with the times.

In April, the acclaimed pianist and composer returns to UKK and Jazzhörnan, after two acclaimed trio concerts in 2014 and 2017. This time, he will join us with a powerful quartet – a rare chance to experience Shai Maestro’s next creative step up close.

After the concert, the stage is open for a jam session led by a trio from Uppsala Jazzclub.
