About the Performance
On the coast of Halland lies the grand and beautiful “Badhotell Klitterviken.” Or rather… it was grand when it was first built. Now, in the late 1920s, after years of declining guest numbers, the seaside hotel has definitely seen better days.
However, this is a fact that the pompous owner Estrid (Helena Aspeflo) stubbornly refuses to acknowledge. In her world, Klitterviken still shines, and she does everything she can to keep the illusion alive. She constantly hounds her henpecked husband Hubert (Håkan Klamas) to do whatever they can to survive and, above all, keep up the facade of an exclusive seaside hotel, even though the walls tell a completely different story.
It’s the Prohibition era, and a great deal of German schnapps is being smuggled across the Kattegat. Hotel owner Hubert has therefore, behind his wife’s back, struck a deal with one of the West Coast’s biggest smuggling kingpins, Konrad Stålberg (Daniel Träff), to make a little extra money. A large shipment of contraband liquor was delivered to the hotel during the night and is now to be transported onward.
The whole affair would surely have gone quite smoothly if it hadn’t been for the fact that Estrid had booked a wake at the hotel that same day for the wealthy widow Stråhle (Ewa Roos), whose late husband had been chairman of the Halland Temperance Board. The widow has also promised to donate a substantial sum of money to the hotel, provided that the wake proceeds calmly and with dignity.
The owners’ daughter, Alfrida (Jeanette Capocci), also suddenly shows up at the hotel. She usually lives in Gothenburg, but now she’s on a very personal mission—to expose her lover, whom she suspects of cheating on her. The fact that she’s also recently lost her job and blown most of her parents’ money at the city’s jazz clubs and dance joints… well, those are details she’s been very careful not to share with Mom and Dad.
Of course, the problems don’t take long to surface. Pastor Livhed (Mikael Riesebeck), who is supposed to lead the memorial service, turns out to have narcolepsy and falls asleep every few minutes. The local mailman, Dag-Otto Flink (Jojje Jönsson), shows up to “help out” but eventually isn’t sure if he’s a mailman, a smuggler, a waiter, or a priest. The chatty and outspoken Rut (Annika Andersson) and her mumbling, stumbling, and bath-loving husband Ragnar (Mikael Riesebeck) check into the hotel and, of course, get unwittingly caught up in the chaos.
With a dilapidated seaside hotel crammed with bootleg liquor, a corpse lost in the woods, menacing liquor enforcement officers, far too many priests, and a coffin that never seems to contain what it’s supposed to—the chaos is about to reach a fever pitch!
It’s going to be a hilarious, slapstick comedy set in a saltwater bath where the coffin is way too cramped!
