About the Performance

Satumaa—is the title of the most famous Finnish tango. Translated into English, Satumaa means “Fairyland.” The lyrics and narrative are based on Anna Heikkinen’s personal memories, interviews with relatives, preserved letters, and diary entries from World War II—a turbulent time after which Anna’s father, Pekka, arrived in Seglora as an unaccompanied child from Finland. Told as a story by a child to an unaccompanied refugee, the performance also reflects aspects of our pressing present and future.

Through a tapestry of words and music—Finnish and Swedish lyrics, accordion, saxophone, and cello—the performance searches for a lost Satumaa—a fairy-tale land of its own.

The songs are sung in both Swedish and Finnish. The narration is in Swedish.

Participants:

  • Anna Heikkinen, vocals and storytelling
  • Larisa Ljungkrona-Mönttinen, accordion and vocals
  • Ida Gillner, soprano saxophone and vocals
  • Leonor Palazzo, cello and vocals

Satumaa

Through their tango interpretations, Anna Heikkinen & Längtans Kapell explore the past and their roots, while searching for a Swedish-Finnish identity and a lost language.

The texts and stories are based on Anna Heikkinen’s personal memories and interviews with her relatives. The narrative is also grounded in old letters and diary entries from the time of World War II—a turbulent era when Anna’s father, Pekka, arrived alone as a child from Finland to Sweden. Told through the voice of the daughter of a child who set out alone in the midst of the war, the story also reflects our own time and our future.

The performance searches for its own lost Fairyland, carried along by words and melodies, Finnish and Swedish lyrics, and the sounds of the accordion, saxophone, and cello.

The songs in the show are in Finnish and Swedish, and the stories are in Swedish.

  • Anna Heikkinen – vocals
  • Sara Fridholm – haitari, vocals (substitute for Larisa Ljungkrona-Mönttinen)
  • Ida Gillner – soprano saxophone, vocals
  • Leonor Palazzo – cello, vocals
