In the fall’s second public conversation, Sverker Sörlin, author, historian of ideas, and professor of environmental history, and Erik Hedlund, professor of leadership at the Swedish Defence University, begin by examining and exploring the concept of preparedness: What is meant by preparedness? And how does one know that one is prepared? Can one be prepared for everything? We also take a closer look at what it actually is that we want to defend in today’s society and what defense has to do with culture, education, and the people.

During the discussion, Sverker Sörlin will sign copies of his new book, *In Defense of Adult Education*.

“The Ideal” is a cultural project that promotes philosophical conversations in society. A philosophical conversation is distinguished by its focus on the questions, rather than the answers. A philosophical conversation also has clear guidelines and a facilitator who establishes and maintains the structure of the conversation. In this way, a philosophical conversation allows us to reflect on big and complex questions together.

As part of ” Det idéala,” public talks are held at Uppsala Konsert & Kongress.

Each public conversation centers on a current cultural or social issue and begins with a live music performance by a young local musician (this fall, Lovisa Sörgjerd). Setting the mood with live music creates the right conditions for an engaged conversation. The music is followed by a 45-minute panel discussion in which invited guests from academia, the cultural sector, civil society, or the business community share their perspectives based on their expertise. Afterward, the audience is invited to reflect on selected follow-up questions in small groups, drawing on their own experiences, for 30 minutes. The discussions conclude with 30 minutes of group reflection, during which the audience shares their thoughts and continues the discussion with one another and the invited guests. In this way,
, deep prior knowledge is interwoven with broad life experience, creating opportunities for a greater shared understanding.

The discussion lasts a total of two hours, and no prior knowledge is required. You are warmly invited to explore your ideas and ideals together with others and to discover what philosophy has to do with you and with public discourse.
