About the Performance

Experience the music of Stevie Wonder in a unique concert when three of Uppsala’s foremost musical constellations – Uppsala Wind Symphony Orchestra, the gospel choir The Gloryfires and Trio X – meet Sweden’s soul and gospel king Samuel Ljungblahd in the Great Hall at Uppsala Concert & Congress.

Together, they turn the summer evening into a swinging musical feast filled with timeless soul and gospel hits in powerful new arrangements, created especially for this concert – with over 70 musicians and singers on stage!

Stevie Wonder has left a mark like few others, with melodies, grooves, harmonies and songs that go straight to the body and the heart. This year marks 65 years since he was signed as ‘Little Stevie Wonder’ at the age of 11, launching a career that continues to inspire new generations of musicians and listeners. It is also the 50th anniversary of the legendary double album Songs in the Key of Life, released in 1976, and the concert program features classic hits such as “Isn’t She Lovely” and “I Wish” from the album.

Tonight’s soloist is Samuel Ljungblahd, a well-known name to the general public, not least through the TV program Så ska det låta. When he later sang at the wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, he created one of those moments that lingers, when the royals danced out of the church.

He will be backed by The Gloryfires, led by Johanna Engholm, an Uppsala-based gospel choir known for its strong energy, singing joy and stage presence. Also on stage is Trio X, one of Sweden’s most renowned piano trios, with an expression that moves freely between genres – always with the interaction at the center.

Everything is led by Uppsala Wind Symphony Orchestra and conductor Leif Karlsson, one of Sweden’s foremost wind orchestras that always offers world-class wind music, whether it is classical sounds or sweaty soul and heavy funk on the program!

In addition to Stevie Wonder, this powerful collection of musicians also plays songs by legends such as Earth, Wind & Fire, as well as music by gospel singer-songwriter Andraé Crouch, one of the genre’s biggest names.
