About the Performance
“Kaddish”, Carl-Johan Vallgren’s first album in 16 years, is an intimate album about tumultuous love, sudden death and paralyzing grief. The album and the novel “Kärleken” are twin works that touch on his wife’s death from cancer with flashbacks. This fall, he will take the band on a tour of Sweden with the new stories, and on October 22 they will come to UKK.
Carl-Johan Vallgren’s upcoming album and novel are two sides of the same coin.
– “In a way, the album might be the soundtrack to the book, but it could also be the other way around – that the novel is the explanation for the album,” he says.
The novel “Kärleken” and the album “Kaddish” will both be released simultaneously on October 16. The album, recorded with a small ensemble and produced by Johan Lindström, begins in mourning for his wife’s death from cancer in 2023 and, like the book, moves over time.
The original plan was to write a sequel to the acclaimed novel “Your Time Will Come” from 2024. When the desire did not arise, Carl-Johan instead picked up the guitar for the first time in many years (the last album release was 2010’s “Nattbok”).
The melodies came easily to him and he immediately understood what the songs would be about. Soon he also realized that there had to be a novel on the same theme. The two works then developed in parallel.
– I started writing because I had to find out what really happened. It is also a farewell, and a declaration of love,” says Carl-Johan Vallgren.
