About the Performance
Since 2017, the Russian feminist protest collective Pussy Riot has been touring the world with *Riot Days*, a multimedia performance that weaves together live music, speeches, video, and performance art. The show is based on Maria “Masha” Alyokhina’s memoirs about Pussy Riot’s protests, the trial following the high-profile “punk prayer” in 2012, and her time in a Russian prison. Riot Days has been performed over 400 times worldwide and has been honored with awards including the Herald Angel Award, the Total Theatre Award, and the Woody Guthrie Prize.
In this new version, the narrative expands to include the dramatic years that have followed. Alyoekhina’s own arrests and Pussy Riot’s ongoing protests are interwoven with stories of the oppression of LGBTQI+ people, the fate of Alexei Navalny, and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The result is an ever-evolving performance where the personal and the political go hand in hand—and where art becomes a tool for resistance.
