Portuguese conductor Nuno Coelho and German violinist Carolin Widmann visited Uppsala
Chamber Orchestra together in the fall of 2022, where we heard a fantastic performance of Ligeti’s difficult violin concerto. Now it is Korngold’s beautiful and cinematic violin concerto from 1947 that takes center stage. There will also be Arkvik and Dvořák.

Cinematic violin concert

Korngold had a successful career in his native Austria before the First World War. He fled
Nazism in Europe in 1934 to the United States and went on to become a popular Hollywood composer. In the
Violin Concerto from 1947, Korngold builds on various themes from his film music. The music contains
nostalgia, melodic imagination, rhythmic vitality and virtuoso challenges.

New commissioned work

There will also be new works, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra and Gävle Symphony Orchestra have together commissioned music for orchestra by the Swedish composer Ylva Q, Arkvik. Arkvik is an experienced composer who has written everything from electroacoustic music to opera.

Czech symphony

The evening will conclude with a performance of one of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s greatest works, the
Seventh Symphony from 1885. The symphony would reflect the struggles of the Czech nation and his
desire to see his homeland prosper.

Celebrated violinist

In a 2025 review, The Guardian called Carolin Widmann’s playing “virtuosic and elegant”, two words that describe the violinist well. Widmann is an experienced and internationally recognized violinist who has toured the world. She plays on a G.B. Guadagnini violin from 1782.

Popular conductor

Nuno Coelho has conducted the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra several times before. The list of orchestras he has conducted is long and spans several continents, including the Orquestra Sinfônica de São Paulo and the Minnesota Orchestra.

Uppsala Chamber Orchestra

With a stylistic breadth ranging from grand symphonies to more intimate chamber music works, the
Uppsala Chamber Orchestra has performed live music for the county’s residents for over 50 years. The orchestra, of
many ansedd som en av Sveriges främsta, består av professionella musiker och har en omvittnad
varm och stor orkesterklang. Sedan 2007 ar hemmascenen Uppsala Konsert & Kongress, där man
även har familjekonserter och bjuder in skolklasser för studiebesök. De senaste åren har orkestern
gjort uppskattade gästspel i Estland, i konserthusen i Göteborg, Vara och Norrköping samt Artipelag
på Värmdö. Uppsala Kammarorkester ar en del av stiftelsen Musik i Uppland, en regional
musikorganisation i Uppsala med Region Uppsala som huvudman.
