Program

Charlie Chaplin’s film The City Lights from 1931 with live music by Uppsala Chamber Orchestra. We return to the genius Charlie Chaplin, this time with the film The City Lights from 1931, subtitled, “A Comedy Romance in Pantomime”. Chaplin is behind most of it, directing, producing and starring. Conductor George Morton returns to lead the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra through this
musical movie.

A Tramp in Love

Chaplin’s tragicomic character, the little tramp, meets a blind flower girl who mistakes him for a rich man. The tramp falls in love and tries every way possible to get money to help her. In City Lights, friendship and social ranking are not always what they seem. We enter the world of a disillusioned middle class, where a tramp is king and a blind girl is queen.

Narrative-Driven Music

The music, mostly composed by Chaplin, plays a crucial role in telling the story and conveying emotions. Despite the success of the sound film, Chaplin again chose to use sound technology only for certain effects.

A Third Visit

After two successes, George Morton once again leads the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra to the silver screen with stunning precision. Since 2012, George Morton has established himself as one of Europe’s leading conductors for film with orchestra. In demand in the UK, Germany and Scandinavia, George provides a wide range of film music, from early silent films to modern feature films.

Uppsala Chamber Orchestra

With a range of styles spanning from grand symphonies to more intimate chamber music works, Uppsala Chamber Orchestra has performed live music for the county’s residents for over 50 years. The orchestra, considered by many to be one of Sweden’s finest, consists of professional musicians and is renowned for its warm and full orchestral sound. Since 2007, the home stage has been Uppsala Concert & Congress, where they also give family concerts and invite school classes for study visits. In recent years, the orchestra
has made appreciated guest appearances in Estonia, in the concert halls in Gothenburg, Vara and Norrköping and Artipelag on Värmdö. Uppsala Chamber Orchestra is part of the Music in Uppland Foundation, a regional music organization in Uppsala with Region Uppsala as the principal.

The concert is organized by Musik i Uppland and is part of the Orchestra Series – Grand Subscription.
