Holmander plays Aaron Copland’s jazz-inspired and beautiful Clarinet Concerto. There will also be
Claude Debussy and the evening will end with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.
Debussy’s little suite
The concert evening begins with Debussy’s esteemed suite for piano, Petite Suite from 1889, which was later arranged for orchestra by Debussy’s colleague Henri Büsser in 1907. Conductor Magnus Fryklund, who last visited Uppsala in April 2025, leads the evening. He has been a regular guest conductor for the largest orchestras around Scandinavia.
Unique clarinettist
Through his unique combination of music and magic, clarinetist Magnus Holmander has carved out his own niche in the world of classical music. Praised for his vibrant performances consisting of a strong stage presence with a twinkle in his eye, he visits Uppsala Chamber Orchestra for the first time. Holmander has played in several major concert halls in Europe and collaborated with many contemporary composers, including Jacob Mühlrad and Molly Kien. His repertoire spans several genres and includes jazz and folk music in addition to classical music.
Written for jazz legends
American composer Aaron Copland’s most famous work, the Clarinet Concerto, is poetically beautiful music. With its strong jazz influences and rhythmic elements, the different string sections of the orchestra create a tapestry of melodic phrases and counter-rhythms. The concerto was written for jazz legend Benny Goodman, who premiered it in 1950.
His best symphony
Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony is powerful music created in the context of the turmoil of the times and an artist’s inner struggle. The symphony was a success in 1813, with audiences demanding a repeat of the second movement. Beethoven conducted the premiere himself and called it his best work.
