Concert: Omar Souleyman
Omar Souleyman, who recently collaborated with Gorillaz on their latest album ‘The Mountain’, as well as with artists such as Björk and Four Tet, started his career as a popular wedding singer. Before the civil war broke out in his native Syria in 2011, he had released nearly 500 live cassettes of wedding music.
In 2013, he released his debut album “Wenu Wenu”, produced by Four Tet on the Ribbon/Domino label. His second album, 2015’s “Bahdeni Nami”, was critically acclaimed, as were the three subsequent releases on the Mad Decent label: 2017’s “To Syria, With Love”, 2019’s “SHLON” and 2022’s “ERBIL”. Together, these have established Omar as a force to be reckoned with in global electronic music.
Souleyman has continued to strengthen his position as an icon in both world and electronic music, building an extensive international audience through tours and performances at major festivals such as Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, Pitchfork Paris and Roskilde. In 2013, he performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Norway.
